Clarification on Recent U.S. Visa News: No Impact on J-1 Visa!

On January 14, 2026, the U.S. government announced that it will temporarily stop processing certain immigrant visas for citizens of 75 countries, starting January 21, 2026. This news has caused concern and confusion, also among our members, au pair applicants and host families.

The most important message: This change does NOT affect J-1 au pair visas.

What Is Affected by the New Policy:

The suspension applies only to immigrant visas.

What Is NOT Affected:

The new policy does not apply to non-immigrant visas, which are for temporary stays in the U.S.

This means:

  • J-1 Exchange Visitor visas are NOT affected
  • Au pair programs continue to operate normally

Applicants can continue to apply for J-1 visas following the normal process.

We understand that visa news can be worrying, especially when headlines are unclear. IAPA will continue to monitor developments closely and share updates if anything changes.

If you have questions, please contact your program sponsor or local agency for guidance.
